Do You Offer Maintenance-Free Options? Not Vinyl.
Do You Offer Maintenance-Free Options? Not Vinyl.
Written by Tyler Breen, Co-Founder of RNT Builders
We hear it a lot from homeowners: “We want something maintenance-free.” And it’s a valid request. Nobody wants to spend their weekends repainting siding, repairing trim, or dealing with water damage. But here’s the truth — maintenance-free doesn't mean cutting corners, and it definitely doesn't have to mean vinyl.
Why We Don’t Use Vinyl
Vinyl is cheap, and it shows. It warps, fades, cracks in cold weather, and looks out of place on a quality home. Not to mention, it’s a petroleum-based product that doesn’t age well and often traps moisture behind it. Sure, it’s low-maintenance — but that’s because you can’t do much to fix it when it fails.
Our Alternative: Smarter Low-Maintenance Materials
We believe you can have a sharp-looking, low-upkeep home without sacrificing durability or aesthetics. Here are a few materials we prefer:
• Fiber Cement Siding – Like James Hardie, which offers excellent durability, weather resistance, and a clean finish with baked-on color that lasts.
• Engineered Wood Products – Like LP SmartSide, which mimics real wood with lower maintenance and better rot/mold resistance.
• Pre-Finished Trim & Soffits – That reduce repainting cycles and look sharp for years.
• Metal Roofing & Flashing – Built to last decades with minimal upkeep and solid energy performance.
• High-Performance Coatings – We use pre-finished options and materials that don’t require constant maintenance, helping the house look better longer.
It’s About Smart Planning, Not Just Material Choice
The reason many homes fall apart faster isn’t just the material — it’s how the system was put together. We make sure details are installed right the first time: proper drainage planes, flashing, fasteners, and ventilation are all part of keeping your exterior durable and low-maintenance.
Does It Cost More?
Sometimes. But when you factor in the cost of repairs, repainting, or replacing vinyl after 10–15 years, our approach is far more cost-effective in the long run. And frankly — it looks a hell of a lot better.
